The arithmetic behind a chiller versus a daily ice run

Mostly it comes down to arithmetic. A rowing squad off the water, a football side after an afternoon session, or a physiotherapy room seeing patients back to back all need cold water at a known temperature, multiple times a day, every day. Bagged ice means someone drives out for it each morning, the temperature drifts as the session goes on, and the cost never actually stops accruing. A chiller gets bought once and then holds eight to fifteen degrees on its own, indefinitely.

It changes the water quality too, not just the convenience. Melting ice leaves a tub that starts too cold and ends up too warm, turning any recovery protocol into guesswork. A thermostat-controlled chiller lets a coach fix a target temperature, hold it through an entire squad rotation, and reproduce the same conditions the following week without adjustment. Build quality, chiller sizing and hygiene for shared tubs

Every tub goes together in larch or thermowood over an insulated frame, with a food-grade liner sitting behind the timber. A tightly sealed shell and a close-fitting lid retain cold far more effectively than simply fitting a bigger compressor, and they keep the monthly running figure down as a result. A half-horsepower unit comfortably covers 250-350 litres in a household setting; above 400 litres, or with squads rotating through continuously, we specify a full horsepower instead.

Shared use raises the hygiene requirement considerably. A filter pump with ozone or ultraviolet treatment runs without interruption, the tub has proper drainage with the surround sloped away from it, and club installations get a shorter service interval plus a rinse point beside the steps. Outdoors, the unit sits on a raised plinth under cover with room for air to circulate around it. A chiller alone, fitted to a tub you already own, runs an indicative IDR 25-55 million.

Power, water treatment and the footprint an ice bath needs

Less power than most people assume it needs. The compressor draws roughly 0.5 to 1 kW, so a 2,200 VA connection carries the whole setup, and no PLN application is required for the plunge on its own - useful news in Bukit Besar and Talang Semut, where raising the connection is genuinely awkward. It still gets a dedicated circuit and an ELCB, because a compressor and pump added onto an existing household ring will trip a breaker sooner or later regardless.

For footprint, allow the tub itself plus a metre for steps and a rinse point, with the chiller sitting no more than a few metres away. Budget one to two weeks on site whether that is Jakabaring, Talang Kelapa or Ilir Barat I; the carpentry moves fast, the plumbing does not. Held cold around the clock, the running figure is an indicative IDR 300,000-700,000 a month; paired with a two-person cabin the combined package runs IDR 100-160 million, with every combination laid out on the full price list.
